This week we add Tennessee lawmakers Rep. Jody Barrett, R-Dickson, and Rep. Mark Pody, R-Lebanon to SCREW’s SHIT LIST for sponsoring legislation that treats pregnancy like a potential crime and bodily autonomy like a technicality. Their proposed amendment to House Bill 570 would fold abortion directly into Tennessee’s homicide laws by legally equating harm to a fetus with harm to a born child. That’s not rhetoric, it’s statute. Under that framework, prosecutors could pursue charges carrying penalties up to life in prison or even the death penalty… for an abortion.
This has nothing to do with protecting life and everything to do with expanding the state’s authority into places it has no business being.
Tennessee already bans abortion from fertilization and forces doctors and patients to defend medical decisions in court after the fact. This bill goes further by stripping explicit protections for pregnant people and turning medical outcomes into criminal exposure. Once pregnancy is governed by homicide law, miscarriages invite scrutiny, complications invite suspicion, and bodies stop belonging to the people inside them. That’s government overreach in its most honest form.
You don’t have to support abortion to understand the danger. A government that can criminalize pregnancy can criminalize anything it decides is inconvenient. THIS STORY included. The bill is still stuck in committee, which is the only reason these MEN aren’t higher on the SHIT LIST yet.
