The Hypnotic Eye #1: “Welcome to the Eye”

Posted on February 1, 2025April 25, 2025 by Phil Italiano

“You are getting sleeeeeazy…”

Birthed from the fevered mind of Dallas-based artist Joe Riley, The Hypnotic Eye was a bastard child of late-night TV, underground zine culture, and drive-in brainrot. Airing on public access in the mid-1990s, it was a one-man audiovisual freakshow that smashed together vintage sleaze, foreign commercials, weird cartoons, kung fu clips, horror oddities, Satanic panic newsreels, and rock ‘n’ roll decay — all stitched together like a ransom note made out of static and sin.

Riley, who handled everything from editing to voiceovers to puppet interludes, created a late-night Frankenstein of visual ephemera that predicted meme culture, vaporwave aesthetics, and YouTube collage editing years before they had names. The Hypnotic Eye wasn’t a show — it was a psychedelic seizure with a sense of humor.

Aired in a pre-YouTube era, this was pirate broadcasting for the truly weird, made by a guy who knew his Russ Meyer from his Ray Dennis Steckler, and wasn’t afraid to cut 1960s dental safety films between Japanese superhero battles and religious cult recruitment tapes.

📼 Episode 1: “Welcome to the Eye”

The inaugural episode kicks open the screen door to Riley’s VHS-addled vision. There’s no easing in — The Hypnotic Eye starts with a bang, or rather a blast of old toy commercials, monster movie trailers, twisted PSAs, and foreign game show madness.

It’s Wayne’s World meets Liquid Television after huffing glue and falling into a beta tape pile. Episode one establishes the mission: Disorient, entertain, and corrupt your eyeballs. There is no host, no plot, no order — only The Eye.

Due to recent age verification laws and restrictions from banks and credit card companies dictating what we can and can’t print online, SCREW Magazine has chosen to drop online subscriptions rather than bend the knee. With that vital revenue stream gone, we need your support to keep doing what we do. Please help us keep the content (and the chaos) flowing and FREE-TO-READ by subscribing to our PREMIUM STREAMING SERVICE or perhaps tipping us a few bucks. Whether it's $1 or $100, every penny is another big, fat middle finger to The Man...
