The band? The Vapors — a bunch of pasty British lads with just enough eyeliner and emotional damage to get airplay. The song? “Turning Japanese.” The meaning? Well… that’s where it gets slippery.
Some rock stars smash guitars. Other rock stars snort ants. And then there’s Led Zeppelin, rock stars who walked into a Seattle hotel in 1969 and walked out having allegedly sodomized a groupie with a mudshark.
This song was born after The Skips got kicked out of a dive bar for playing a punk cover of ‘Ave Maria’ at triple speed. The crowd loved it; the owner, a retired Catholic church handyman, didn’t.
