Hajime Sorayama’s Desire Machines Short-Circuits Miami

Posted on April 26, 2025April 26, 2025 by Phil Italiano

Walk into the new Museum of Sex in Miami, and you’re no longer in Florida. You’re inside a wet dream from the future—one designed by a Japanese genius with a spray gun and a thing for chrome curves. Desire Machines, the latest show by legendary illustrator Hajime Sorayama, is a high-gloss mindfuck of erotica and androids, where the wires are exposed and the fantasies are fully operational.

Long before AI girlfriends were sliding into your DMs and robot dolls started pouting on OnlyFans, Sorayama was airbrushing metal tits onto pin-up poses and hardwiring desire into circuitry. The exhibit, his first at the Museum of Sex, is a slick tribute to four decades of masturbatory mechanics. It all started in 1980 with a C-3PO-inspired commission for a Japanese whiskey company that wanted a “sexy robot.” What they got was the birth of a new fetish.

Hajime Sorayama: Desire Machines

Sorayama’s “Sexy Robots”—iconic, hyperreal, and unapologetically objectified—blend the spit-shined allure of mid-century cheesecake with the cold inevitability of techno-fascination. These are machines that look like they fuck back. In Desire Machines, they loom large and luscious, rendered in a style that fuses classical Japanese brushwork with airbrush precision. The effect is almost unnerving: high art that humps low culture with ruthless elegance.

And make no mistake—this is porn. Not in the crude, meat-and-potatoes way, but in the slippery, sci-fi sense that Donna Haraway warned us about when she said, “We are all chimeras… cyborgs.” Sorayama takes that to its logical, libidinal conclusion. These aren’t just paintings—they’re visual kinks, built for a species that swipes right on algorithms and buys pocket pussies with Bluetooth.

But the real trick of Desire Machines is how seamlessly it rides the razor’s edge between the mechanical and the mythological. The cyborgs are often posed like classical nudes or retro starlets—hips cocked, legs spread, lips parted—but they shimmer with metal skin and LED eyes. It’s Aphrodite meets AutoCAD. East meets West. Pleasure meets programming.

Hajime Sorayama: Desire Machines

This isn’t just an art show. It’s a prophetic mirror held up to our leaking libidos and dying sense of intimacy. In a world where we willingly let Alexa listen to our orgasms and AI can write your sexts, Sorayama’s work feels less like fantasy and more like future nostalgia—pin-ups from a time just a few years from now, when touch is optional and kink is downloadable.

Sorayama, who helped design Sony’s AIBO robot dog and once dropped a 40-foot robot babe on a Dior runway, isn’t shy about the commercial appeal of his visions. These “desire machines” are products of late-stage capitalism’s wettest dreams: beautiful, obedient, untiring, and a little dangerous.

And maybe that’s the point. In Sorayama’s world, the line between subject and object has melted into molten chrome. Are we ogling the robots? Or are they looking back at us, judging our meat-bag desperation?

Either way, Desire Machines delivers a jolt of pure aesthetic arousal. Miami just got a lot hotter—and a hell of a lot shinier.

Museum of Sex Miami is located at 2200 NW 24th Avenue in Miami. For more information about this exhibition and others, as well as admission prices and hours, call (786) 206-9210 or visit museumofsex.com.
